Coalescer en Separator Filters

Coalescer and separator filters are widely used in processes where the separation of liquids and gases is critical to the quality and reliability of the end product. Typical applications include the petrochemical, energy, aviation, and general process industries.
At Van Borselen Filters, we offer a complete range of coalescer and separator cartridges suitable for both standard and demanding operating conditions.

Coalescer filter element

This coalescer filter cartridge is constructed from high-quality composite materials and features strong hydrophilic properties. As a result, it not only removes mechanical impurities from the medium, but also separates emulsified water through demulsification and coalescence. Small water droplets are merged into larger droplets, allowing subsequent purification to take place easily and efficiently.

Coalescer and Separator Filters – Reliable Liquid and Gas Separation

In many industrial processes, it is essential to efficiently remove liquids and solid particles from gas streams. Typical examples include the removal of oil and water from compressed air, natural gas, fuels, or process streams. For these applications, coalescer and separator filters are indispensable.
At Van Borselen Filters, we supply high-quality coalescer filter elements and separator cartridges that ensure optimal gas-liquid separation — offering maximum efficiency and minimal pressure drop.

How Does a Coalescer Filter Work?

A coalescer filter removes fine liquid droplets from gas streams. Tiny droplets (such as water or oil) are captured within the fiber structure of the filter media. Inside the media, these droplets merge (coalesce) into larger drops, which then drain downward by gravity or through the flow direction.
The result is a dry, clean gas stream that can safely be used in sensitive equipment or downstream processes.

Our coalescers are made from paper-glass fiber media, offering filtration efficiency down to 1 micron, and are designed to withstand operating pressures up to 75 psid and temperatures up to 240°F (115°C).
They are available in various sizes and configurations, making them easy to install in existing filter housings and systems.

The Importance of the Separator Cartridge

After coalescing, the separated liquid droplets must be effectively removed — this is the role of the separator filter cartridge.
The separator prevents the liquid from being re-entrained into the gas stream. Thanks to its Teflon filter mesh with hydrophobic properties, the separator repels liquids while allowing gas to pass freely, ensuring a completely dry gas outlet.

Separator cartridges operate with an outside-to-inside flow direction, have a pH resistance range of 5 to 9, and can withstand the same maximum temperature of 240°F (115°C) as the coalescers. They are equipped with Buna-N gaskets to guarantee a tight, leak-free seal.

Applications of Coalescer and Separator Filters

Coalescer and separator filters are used in various industries where gas or liquid purity is critical. Typical applications include:

  • Gas filtration – Removal of moisture and oil from natural gas, nitrogen, hydrogen, or compressed air

  • Fuel and oil separation – Water removal from kerosene, diesel, or hydraulic oils

  • Chemical and petrochemical processes – Protection of catalysts and process equipment

  • Condensate treatment – Removal of residual water and oil from steam systems

  • Aviation industry – Purification of jet fuels and dehydration of fuel systems

By combining coalescer and separator filters, a complete two-stage separation system is created that removes both liquids and solid contaminants from the gas stream — resulting in extremely low residual moisture content.

Advantages

  • Maximum efficiency and long service life
