Activated Carbon Filters
At Van Borselen Filters, we offer a wide range of activated carbon filters, including versatile carbon filter cartridges and carbon block filters. But which type of activated carbon cartridge or carbon filter best suits your process? Don’t worry — we’re here to help by asking the right questions.
What Are Activated Carbon Filter Cartridges and Carbon Filters?
Activated carbon filter cartridges and carbon filters are filtration elements that contain activated carbon, typically derived from coconut shell or wood. These filters are used to remove taste, color, and odor through adsorption from liquids or gases. There are various types of carbon and activated carbon materials used in these filters. Carbon filters are also known as activated charcoal filters.
Where Are Activated Carbon Filter Cartridges and Carbon Filters Used?
Activated carbon filters are used across many industries — for decolorization, deodorization, removal of taste compounds, and chlorine reduction in your process.
What Types of Activated Carbon Filters Are Available?
We offer several types of activated carbon filter elements:
- Activated Carbon Filter Cartridges
- Activated Carbon Filter Sheets
- Activated Carbon Filter Modules
- Granular Activated Carbon in Housings
Additional Information
Our carbon filters are made from a variety of raw materials, such as coconut shell, lignite, wood, and peat. The activation process has two goals:
- To create a unique internal pore structure with a large surface area
- To enhance adsorption properties by removing hydrocarbons attached to the carbon
Steam Activation
Steam activation uses oxidizing gases (steam and CO₂) in a rotary kiln at temperatures between 800 and 1000°C for up to 100 hours. This produces powders with high purity and microporosity — ideal for high-efficiency carbon filters.
Chemical Activation
Chemical activation with agents like zinc chloride or phosphoric acid creates a structure with more meso- and macropores — perfect for absorbing larger molecules. Without this activation process, carbon will not function effectively as a filter medium.
Key Industries
Activated carbon filter cartridges and modules are widely used in industries such as pharmaceuticals, chemicals, food & beverage, and many other applications. They are ideal for decolorizing, deodorizing, and chlorine removal in liquid processing.
Applications in Air and Water
Also known as carbon air or water filters, these components are essential in air purification systems and water treatment installations. Their porous structure, composed of activated carbon, provides a vast surface area filled with microscopic pores that capture odors, chemicals, and contaminants. They’re used to improve air quality and purify drinking water by removing chlorine and organic compounds.
We supply activated carbon filters in a wide variety of sizes and types — both our own line and well-known brands such as Amatek — often directly from stock.
