BFTT-PES-2: PES TFF Cassette with Polyurethane Construction

The BFTT-PES-2 is a membrane cassette with a polyethersulfone (PES) membrane in a polyurethane construction for tangential flow filtration (TFF). This technique, also known as crossflow filtration, is used to concentrate liquids and perform diafiltration, for example for buffer exchange.

During tangential flow filtration, the liquid flows along the membrane surface. Part of the liquid passes through the membrane as permeate. Retained components remain in the retentate. The selected cut-off helps determine which components are retained and which can pass through the membrane.

Cut-Offs from 1 to 1000 kDa

The BFTT-PES-2 is available with the following molecular weight cut-off (MWCO) values: 1, 3, 5, 8, 10, 30, 50, 100, 300, 500 and 1000 kDa. Both 100S and 100L versions are available at 100 kDa.

The appropriate cut-off is selected based on the components you want to retain, the composition of the liquid and the required separation.

Five Effective Membrane Areas

The BFTT-PES-2 is available in the following effective membrane areas:

  • 0.01 m² — 100 cm²
  • 0.02 m² — 200 cm²
  • 0.11 m²
  • 0.50 m²
  • 2.50 m²

The appropriate membrane area depends on factors such as process volume, liquid properties and target processing time.

Four Screen Configurations

The BFTT-PES-2 product range includes four screen options:

  • A – Tight screen
  • C – Standard coarse screen
  • D – Coarse screen
  • V – Suspended screen

The cassette is offered with an S – Standard body. Available combinations of screen, cut-off and membrane area vary by configuration; not all options can be combined.

TFF for Concentration and Diafiltration

During concentration, liquid passes through the membrane, increasing the concentration of retained components. Diafiltration is used for buffer exchange or the removal of small components that can pass through the membrane.

To select a suitable cassette, the membrane, cut-off, effective membrane area and screen configuration should match your application and process conditions.
